Best study break ever!

So last night Alex's younger brother Andrew and I paid a friend a visit at his student fundraising event at Mount Royal College. Like the Moxie's gig of yore, this one was smack dab in the middle of all our finals, but we did it anyways because either (a) we're that awesome or (b) well, enough chit chat, let's get down to it:

Best study break ever from Evan Riegel on Vimeo.

The night was ridiculously fun, and to change things up, we started with a full 2 hours of breaks and hip-hop at the beginning of our set (unfortunately not in the video). Even guys that were just there to study or have a beer and weren't really into electro were complimenting us on it. I never get to play all that stuff that I have in my collection like the Propellerheads, the Wiseguys, Krafty Kuts and so on, so I was just lovin' it too.

Add in a dash of flirtatious behaviour by a few mystery women (love note posted below), a few drinks, both of us getting hit on by a couple gay guys and this party is in full swing!

Props to Jacob for shattering dancefloor norms with his crazy antics and lovable style!! (The one clip in the vid with just him and his friend dancing it hysterical!)

Side note: Exams are DONE as of today and beat-making is in full swing! Expect something by season's end!

Bang on,
Evan

P.S. It WAS a toga night, but obviously there was not enough team spirit to go around... :)

Alex, how did you know??

Well, well, well, look who beat me to the punch! I guess you could say Alex and I are feelin' antsy not updating the blog every second day like we used to. Fear not - exams are done with one hellish week from now and then it's straight beat-making from now until sometime in January! You guys' ears are going to love us, believe me on this one.

Anyways, nobody comes on here to hear me yak, so have some posting love!

I Would Like Just a BOOM BOOM BOOM!

Just a little something to spice up your day before exams start next week...

GOOD LUCK!

This is the last mix tape we're posting for a few months

There's a few reasons for this: First, Alex and I need a break and I also feel you guys need a break from our constant posts!

But the main reason you're not going to see many more mix tapes from us for a while is because Alex and I had a talk today about our direction as a musical group and we talked about all the people out there on the internet today that are just like us except they are busy making music and then get to post and write about it on their own blogs and we got all teary-eyed and emotional and resolved to put the balls to the walls and start making our own beats.

So basically, we're not posting any more music until it's OUR music. The next time we come on here and have something to say, it will be about something we made. From scratch. And you guys are going to love it.

I hope.

Anyways, I am still macho proud of this mixtape that I'm giving to you guys, as I worked very very long and hard on it (12+ hours), and it contains some of Alex and my all-time favourites and electronic music industry classics.

The name comes from the animal-shaped pancakes my mom used to bake for me as a kid and that she made for me and Alex a morning after DJ'ing.

With love,

... Make a WISH!

Why hello everybody,

It wasn't too long ago that I was on here to wish our beloved Evan happy birthday, but now I am back with the aftermath of that night... A BRAND NEW MIX! Consider this a little present to all of you from Evan and I. After a painfully-delightful dinner of all-you-can-eat ribs at Tony Roma's, we went back to Evan's house and laid down this beauty. It's short and sweet and broken up into two parts:

Part A - My half, "Evan and Alex need some ice cream" mix (First 5 songs)
Part B - Evan's "I'll cry if I want to after eating too many ribs" mix, the second half.

I picked songs I thought Evan would like to hear on his birthday if he was at a club, and for Evan's half, I told him to play whatever the heck he wanted - because it was his birthday!

It was kind of a spur of the moment thing, so hope you enjoy it and give us some feedback!

xoxoxo,
Alex

Good things full of HOPE

Hey ya'll,

Sorry its been a while since I have last reported back to my station, BUT I've been super busy with school, you know midterms and such. Aside from everything going on at school, I was pretty happy with the Obama win, that was of course celebrated in style, which equals three bottles of champagne - two to drink and one to burst everywhere! Nothing much else to say right now except that you should be expecting a few surprises in the near future... THE NEAR FUTURE... da-da-daaaaaa... okay, I'll stop.

X's and O's for all of ya!
Alex

I'm a big fan of blogging about things as they happen...

...Which was about 30 minutes ago, at the time of writing this! (2:45am)

Alex and I, Night Panda, had a VERY nice time tonight at Moxie's. The night went off so smoothly, with party people, crazy costumes (a good turnout of costumes, I might add), and pumpin' beats.

We started off with some subliminal and funky house music, moved into melodic and popular house songs, then into electro and then finally into our favourite: pounding wobble, fidget and breakbeats. From what we could gather during the night from seeing the crowd's reaction, they really liked it overall, which is so awesome to hear.

Actually, the person from whom I got the biggest reaction was Chad, the promoter of the event. I have a feeling we may have blown off one or more of his socks. :)

More news: I don't know the details about how this turned out after the night was finished, but the PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT and REGIONAL MANAGER of Moxie's, the company, not Moxie's the restaurant in Southport, were there tonight! And Chad tells me they've never been to one of the Southport location's parties before. Saucy! I hope that we at some point in the night made an impression on them. I don't know why I want to make an impression on them except they sound really important and sound like they're able to get me a full-time job as a DJ, that's all.

The picture you see is courtesy of my Dad, who came to the party with my Mom, a tri-pod and new Canon EOS 5D just to take a picture of the both of us! Talk about awwwwww!

As you can guess, I'm hoping there's going to be some mega spill-off from this party in terms of more opportunities to play and what not, and if there is, you KNOW you'll hear about it here first!

Night y'all,
Evan

Samples and teasers for this Friday

Hey everyone,

Not too too much to say here, just wanted to post a sample of what's in the works for this Friday!

What you're looking at are spy shots of our will-be 6 speaker surround sound system in my garage and the first completed piece of our costumes.

I can hardly breathe right now...

Alex and I, Night Panda, have been asked to be THE entertainment for the Moxie's Halloween party, Zombiefest, next Friday, October 31st!!!

Now, I want to give you an idea of how insane this is: Alex and I have met up with the promoter of all Moxie's events, Chad, on Monday once already to introduce ourselves and find out about the event, but I met up with him yet again tonight to talk logistics, and here's what I have in my hand right now:

I got Chad really excited by telling him what kind of parties we like to throw and the costumes we wear and the lights and effects we bring and the music we play, and he has given me essentially 100% creative free reign on the night! I told him that between Alex and I, we are actually going to invite absolutely everyone we know, and of course that only made him more excited, SO -

For the night of Friday October 31st, Alex and I are going to be throwing the most immense party we've ever attempted, rivaling the legend of Flowatholon (scroll below if you don't know what I'm referring to). I will tell you everything we are going to have at this party next Friday:

- We, the DJs, our ridiculous costumes, and our even more ridiculous music
- Lights. LOTS of lights. Black lights, red lights, strobe lights, flood lights (industrial strength. Chad told me)
- Smoke machine. Oh yeah baby.
- Four PA's and two subwoofers to surround the dancefloor (by the way, if you didn't know Moxie's had a dancefloor, and a killer one at that, with a bolted-down marble table that you can dance on in the middle of it all, well, now you do)
- LOTS of people. I am inviting everyone I know, Alex as well. And not to mention, as I found out from Chad tonight, the event itself actually has a reputation of its own, so the general public will be there as well.
- And did I mention pounding Wobble, Electro and House from 9pm until 2am???

If I haven't convinced you by now that I would actually wet my pants to see you there at 9pm next Friday, Halloween, tell me and I will get in my car right now and drive to wherever you are and take you to Peter's Drive-In to seal the deal.

For those of you that have homework or midterms that week or whatever, I think I can relate: I actually have a programming midterm from 6:30pm - 8:30pm THAT NIGHT, and you can bet I'll have to write the darn thing with my costume on and race down south when it's done. So if you see a red Honda pulled over on Crowchild with an officer arresting Edward Scissor hands, now you know why.

Actually, I haven't decided on my costume yet, but it's gonna be bonk and so will Alex's.

I'm going to pass out now. I typed this all out in one breath, did you know that?

*Body Hits floor. 3 minutes pass. Startles awake, rubs eyes, climbs back to keyboard.*

Okay, there you have it. I asked Chad tonight for 200 posters that I'm going to be stapling up around the University in the next two days, so you're going to see posters up for "Zombiefest" at Moxie's in the south close to Southcentre. Yes, some of you live in the North, but you see, when our great city was formed, they actually thought of that problem, and they built this nifty road that actually takes you all the way here!

Zesty!!

Peace and Love,
Night Panda

Believe it or not...

...This post is purely to create a buffer between the two seemingly depressing posts below and what is to come: A super-exciting, thrilling, pump-you-up post!

"Evan, how can you say such things", you ask? Well, I know this because Alex and I are about to update our blog with a brand new mix!

I won't talk about it too too much, though, because that would steal away from the post itself. I will say, however, on a different note, that Alex and I have been very busy lately in Engineering Boot Camp battling demons and sorcerers with our minds. Don't worry though - the good guys are winning this battle.

Update: Alex moved into a place of his own, the basement suite of a house close to the university, which both me and him thought would be the ideal romp pad for throwing down gnarly DJ sets whenever we felt like it. But as it turns out, the tenants upstairs are clinically allergic to sound, and will frequently come all the way down the stairs to ask for us to turn it down. Frick, eh?

Anyways, that mix is coming up PRONTO and you are all jewels in Alex and my heart!

Evan out.

What he said

Hello interested bloggers,

Last night Alex and I played our electronic music in a scene we expected would produce a throbbing, energetic, supportive audience similar to the one we ranted about earlier this year -the crowd of the infamous "Flowathalon". (It really was that good) During doing our thing, we received a bit of curiosity from party-goers here and there, and people did dance...a bit, but if you ask us for a report on the night, we were more disappointed than we were not-disappointed.

I'm gonna share a little of my heart here. The only reason I am so passionate about DJ'ing is the desire to give people the good feelings that I get when I listen to the music that I play for you. However, living in Calgary all my life, I am more than aware that lots and lots of people aren't ready for my style of music, don't like it, can't stand it, whatever the case may be. What this means for me is that if I am to get a positive reaction from crowds, I need to be sensitive to their backgrounds and tastes while challenging them with mine with the intent of maybe sparking a new interest in their lives for something different.

If you gave me one more chance, I would re-think a lot of the things I did last night. I would have started out with different music and transitioned into different songs in different ways. But this all adds to the experience I collect to better prepare me for next time.

I still wish I had a better starting point, say, maybe a demographic that genuinely LIKED electronic music, but we can't all live in Detroit, Chicago, Paris, London, Egypt, Melbourne, Sydney, Shanghai, Dubai, Berlin, Rome, Rio De Janeiro, Amsterdam, Madrid, Miami, San Francisco or Mexico now, can we?

I wish I could post with better news, but I don't see the point in faking.

Morose nouvelles are what we have this week. We hope as much as you to be able to brighten this blog with better stories in the future.

Pace out,
Evan

There was a day...

pic: ~pasgubbe

This may just be the frustration of an empty dance floor, but what ever happened to the good ole' bangin' house parties were people ACTUALLY came to drink, party and most importantly dance. It may just be a personal opinion, but if my services are being requested free of charge, I expect to see one overflowing dance floor or at least some expressed interest in what we are doing. Sorry for all the playa-hating, but playing to an empty dance floor for the night is kind of like a bad rash, it doesn't just go away. So for those of you wanting some of our party-destroying music, it may just come with a price tag nowadays. Here's a couple inspirational quotes to finish off, maybe help uplift my mood!

"Only he who has seen better days lives to see better days again knows their full value."

-Mark Twain

"Prepare your mind to receive the best that life has to offer."
- Ernest Holmes

People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
But when the darkness sets in,
Their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.
-Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

To better days,
Alex

Crunch time and MANY Thanks...

Hey ya'all,

Sorry for the lack of posts, but schools in session and it's definitely grind time. For those of you who missed the Flowatholon, DAMN! You guys really missed out. I'd like to shout out to Neil, Mark, Jacob, Alex, and anybody else who had a hand in organizing this event, because it was just off the heezy! Our side stage was set in a little opening on location at the beautiful Canoe Meadows in Kananaskis. Cannot describe how beautiful this area was. The river that runs right next to the area is spectacular, having been modified for Riversurfing and Kayaking. Wish I was able to do either one of those sports!

Anyways, our set was from about 8:30pm until 11pm. We donned our customary tribal garments and masks, set up four black lights and proceeded to pound sound through the crowd. We were prey to a few generator power outages, but overall it went awesome thanks to an incredibly appreciative crowd. Evan and I will try to reconstruct our set for all of you who missed out! There was a temporary shut down at 11pm to avoid any trouble with the park ranger, then the talented Alex Staudt opened up the stage again at 11:30 to take us into the early mornings with his quintessential electronic selection. After things were finished on our end, we kicked back, got drunk, and enjoyed the rest of the night wandering the forest, checking out the main stage, stopping at the crystal cabin and even hanging out with the paramedics on site.

Hope that satisfies your hunger for Le Panda, at least for the meanwhile anyways. You can catch us next Friday at Brendan's B-day celebration where once again, we'll be bringin' the heat!

PEACE!

Alex

Countdown to Our Show This Saturday

If you are reading these words, you have anywhere from 1 to 3 days left to get tickets to the outdoor event that me and Alex are DJ'ing for this Saturday!

The Details:

- River Surfing/rafting during the day
- BBQ in the evening
- Dance floor at night (the part we play)

- Surfing starts at 1:00pm, but we start at 9:00pm, so if you're coming out to support us, you only have to come at night and dance to our music to make us happy. :)

If I missed something, such as the address, look for the rest of the information here: http://www.riversurfing.ca/flowatholon/flowatholon2.html

Most of you know our music, but you can get a sample of our mixing styles and music choices from downloading these mp3's:
